Athena was born in Los Angeles, California to middle-class parents and was the middle of three children. Her mother owned a restaurant and her father was a firefighter. Athena had a happy, normal childhood with her family until tragedy suddenly struck the Cartwright family.
An earthquake happened when Athena was 8 and her mother's restaurant was destroyed in the process. At the same time, her father was one of the many firefighters that died during the rescuing attempt. Being a daddy's girl, Athena was devastated by losing her father and she dealt with the grief by lashing out, causing mischief and being an overall knucklehead.
When Athena was 13, she got into a fight with a local gang and a boy by the name of Charles McCarter came to her aid, beating the bullies back. The two became a dynamic duo and when they were 16, they started dating and Athena lost her virginity to Charles on their prom night.
After the couple graduated from high school and went to college, their relationship became complicated and they were on and off until Athena revealed that she was pregnant with twins. Charles had gotten engaged to another woman but he promised to be there for her and the kids which he kept true to even after he got married and Athena's subsequent birth to twin girls.
Athena and Charles' on and off relationship continued behind his wife's back until he eventually died from complications regarding diabetes which he had since childhood. Much to Athena's shock and surprise, Charles had left everything to her and their kids in his will and since he was a lawyer, he made it to where the will couldn't be contested or fought against.
Charles' wife was outraged but was helpless to do anything as Athena gathered everything of value to her and moved to Ergastulum with her daughters in tow. Wanting to make the world a better place and add value to her life, Athena decided to join the Ergastulum Police Department and quickly made a name for herself around town thanks to her skills and personality.

Athena is feisty, hot-blooded, and boisterous. When it comes to helping others whether it's by correcting their mistakes, giving them advice, or any other means, she can be brash and blunt but she means well and just wants to place her loved ones on the best path forward. Cockiness and aggressiveness are also a large part of her personality and they can be quite exhausting for someone who's more soft and demure.
Athena is a free-spirited and determined woman who will not back down on her words or her beliefs in order to protect her family and honor. Her true strength lies in her belief in herself, as opposed to others, in which to secure her choices and destiny. This gives her a unique toughness and single-minded perspective that doesn't lack in compassion.
Despite her brash and confrontational manner, Athena is a warm-hearted girl that loves her family very much and she will do anything for them. She's a "ride or die" kind of person when it comes to her relationships and her loyalty knows no limits or bounds. Unfortunately this can backfire on her and cause her to be in some toxic situations, especially in the realms of romance.
Deep down, Athena suffers from abandonment issues as well as low self-esteem and her loyalty is so intense because she doesn't want her loved ones to leave her and because she doesn't want to be alone. She has a hard time dealing with grief and death and when she's faced with them, she can lash out and fall into self-destructive habits to try and forget the pain.
Athena isn't good at talking about her feelings and being pressured or pushed definitely doesn't make things better with her. Not even her family knows about the true turmoil that plagues Athena's mind. The only way she can truly express herself is in written form and she does it well and articulately.
